Burghs Vs Canterbury - Challenge Division - June 2, 2012

By Harpreet Nanda

Burghs was desperately looking for  that elusive first win. The weather Gods and strange umpiring conspired in the game starting later afternoon and being reduced to a 26 overs a side affair. Surprisingly 14 of these 26 overs were deemed to be power play overs. Canterbury won the toss and chose to bat. . Canterbury openers showed caution upfront and were  hesitant to attack which was very unlike them, unfortunately we could not capitalize on that uncharacteristic approach and instead helped their cause by bowling too many extras. Nimeesh Parmar bowled a tight spell in the middle and we sort of pulled it back but the young gun Harris launched a controlled attack in the later overs and Canterbury ended with a respectable 160 odd. Burghs chase began disastrously with a wicket falling first ball. We had a few moments of intensity but overall our attempt at overhauling the target never gained momentum with too many wickets falling at constant intervals. We were bowled out for 120 odd and we lost our 3rd game in a row.

Burghs vs Capital Challenge Division : June 3, 2012

Yeah we finally won a game. The defending champions finally showed some resolve and played close to their potential. The win did not come easy though. Another rain affected/reduced affair (44 overs per side), started off with Burghs taking guard batting first. The conditions were good for bowling and the Capital seamers bowled a tight line. Some careless shots mixed in with some hostile deliveries meant Bughs was reduce to 40 odd for 6. Things were looking bad but Varun and I stuck it out and carved a match saving partnership. After a cautious period of rebuilding Varun launched a solid attack and hit some towering sixes. Finally after a close to 100 run partnership, Varun got out for a splendid 82. After my dismissal Amrinder and Rushi took over and launched a superb late order assault to take the score past 200. We ended with 204 in 44 overs. Rushi hit some splendid long ball and Amrinder was tonking the ball around pretty hard as well. Capital started their chase pretty aggressively with their star batsman Ayoub launching some massive sixes. One six of my bowling was so massive that Jawad had to call a cab to fetch the ball from parking lot of  the General hospital. Regardless, the Burghs bowling line up finally bowled like the attack which one the championship last year, with Saunil leading the way. Arun chipped in with a crucial wicket, Rushi and Navdeep bowled amazing spells in the middle order. Capital launched a later order attack with an eccentric player who looked like an Afghani fabio. Besides powerful hits across the lines his modus operandi involved making phone calls while the bowler was running up to bowl. Saunil and I cleaned up the tail. We also had some great fielding support with smart run outs and a splendid catch by the prez Masih that helped our cause. All in a all a good team effort to register the first win. Hopefully we can forget about the first three games and go on a winning streak again.
