The reigning champs started off their B season on May 11 with a relatively new side. A lot of the faces wore the blue and yellow uniform for the first time as they were about to experience their first cricket game in Ottawa. Despite a few setbacks in the beginning, Burghs continued to give every game a 100%. Early losses encouraged players to approach the senior members in the team and improve in areas where they were failing. Continuous effort and commitment started to change things around as Burghs managed to rack wins on the board. Each member in the bargain began to understand the role they played in the team and tried to contribute to the best of their effort.
There were improvements noticed as the season progressed and players got used to the cricket played in Ottawa. Saunil’s performance with the bat and ball were commendable as he racked up 115 runs and took 23 wickets. Mid-way through the season Burghs played some good cricket and chances to make it to the play-offs were looking good. However, near the end of the season, injuries restricted us from playing our full strength and we just missed our chances to reach the playoffs.
We completed the season with 22 points (5 W 7 L), finishing fourth in the pool. This was the first season for many of the players, and the exposure to Ottawa cricket would help them prepare for the next season.
As a captain I learnt a lot in leading this team and began to approach cricket in a different manner. I am grateful for being given this opportunity and also thankful for the assistance the senior players provided me over the season.
